Pres. Trump claims good and productive conversations with Iranian officials
Markets cheer news, sending oil prices lower
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - President Donald Trump says he’s optimistic that a deal may soon be reached with Iran that could end the U.S.-led war.
The U.S.-led war against Iran is now in its 4th week. But President Trump is suggesting it may be winding down. That’s following what President Trump called “productive talks” between both counties.
On social media Monday , the president said the U.S. military would postpone strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.
The President writing that the U.S. and Iran had “very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East.”
The President briefed reporters prior to boarding Air Force One, departing from West Palm Beach, Florida.
“We have had very, very strong talks. We’ll see where they lead. We have points to major points of agreement. I would say almost all points of agreement will at some point very, very soon meet. We’re doing a five day period. We’ll see how that goes. And if it goes well we’re going to end up with settling this. Otherwise we just keep bombing our little hearts out.”
The President said that Iran had agreed to stop pursuing a nuclear weapon. And he also gave an upbeat forecast of the Strait of Hormuz – which has essentially been shut down to all cargo ships. “It’ll be open there very soon. If this works. And who’s in control? Who wants to be able to control the global oil? The joint control crisis, maybe the United States, maybe.”
It’s not clear who was speaking on behalf of the Iranian government. And according to Iran’s state media, Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied that Iran was in any talks with the U.S.
But the President’s optimism led to an immediate surge in financial markets. Also oil prices fell below $100 a barrel for the first time in days. AAA says the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.96.
