Virginia 5th District among nationwide battleground districts

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Virginia Democrats believe the party can flip the 5th District blue.

It is currently represented by Congressman John McGuire and is on a short list of 40 nationwide “battleground districts” for the upcoming midterm elections.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee sites growing discontent with McGuire and President Trump as reason it believes a Democrat will win the district in November.

“We are confident that we can beat Congressman John McGuire in November,” Eli Cousin with Democratic Congressional Campaign said. “And the reason being is that he has an atrocious record in Congress. He’s voted to spike your healthcare costs. He’s voted to rubber stamp tariffs that are making everything more expensive, and he’s voted to gut health care.”

The DLCC does not endorse candidates before the primaries, but is planning a larger funding push in the 5th District.
