President Trump to address United Nations
80th gathering of world leaders for the General Assembly.
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - President Donald Trump is set to deliver his first address of his second term to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday morning. His appearance at the annual gathering of global leaders comes as several key allies of the U.S. are set to formally recognize a Palestinian state.
When President Trump addresses the U.N. Tuesday morning, he will find himself isolated. Some of America’s closest allies are set to formally recognize Palestinian statehood.
In the days leading up to the UN General Assembly, the U.K., Australia, Canada and France each said they would formally recognize a Palestinian state. They’re joining more than 140 countries that have already done so.
But President Trump has criticized the move, saying it only emboldens Hamas which orchestrated the deadly terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th 2023.
In a statement published Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aimed at leaders who plan to recognize a Palestinian state said, “You are giving a huge reward to terrorism.”
Hamas has governed Gaza for decades, while the Fatah faction has governed the West Bank. Hamas has been labeled a terrorist organization by both the U.S. and the European Union.
But many U.S. allies say they are alarmed by the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
During his visit to New York, President Trump plans to meet with Netanyahu. He will also hold a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders will discuss security guarantees for post-war Ukraine, which Zelenskyy has said are critical to resolving the war with Russia.
Friday, President Trump told reporters, he wants to bring a message of world peace to UNGA 80.
