(CNN) - Amtrak will soon allow more passengers to bring unloaded guns aboard some of its trains.

According to Amtrak, the guns must be carried in a lockbox, and an Amtrak agent would then add an additional lock to it.

The locks will be removed once the passenger arrives at their final destination.

Amtrak said passengers must be at least 18 years old and declare the weapon and ammunition before the trip.

The new policy goes into effect in January and will apply to certain trains, including those in the Northeast Corridor.
