CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The City of Charlottesville is designating the school-owned section of Gentry Lane, near the Charlottesville Early Learning Center, as a school street this fall.

The change will restrict general through traffic to make the area safer for students, families, and staff.

Nearby residents, emergency responders, delivery drivers, and city utility vehicles will maintain access. CAT Bus Route 9 will continue to operate in on its existing alignment

Changes to the route could take place as early as mid-December, but the final date is to be announced.

Temporary boundaries will create single-lane entrances and exits, and permanent barriers could be expected in late-fall.

The city is asking drivers to travel slowly and yield to pedestrians and cyclists. New no-parking signs will be installed near the barriers

The city will also be holding a public open house on Monday November 16, from 5 to 6:30 PM at the Charlottesville Early learning center for community members to meet with project staff, review access maps, and ask questions before the changes begin.

Those unable to attend can find project details and submit feedback here.
