5 injured in Halloween night shootings near Michigan State campus, police say
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) - An investigation is underway after two shootings on Halloween night near the Michigan State University campus left five people injured, authorities said.
At a press conference Sunday afternoon, East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown said the department responded to four separate incidents, including two shootings that left a total of five people injured.
Police officers were called to a reported shooting near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street.
Multiple shots were fired in that incident and three people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to Brown.
Officials said two of the victims were listed in stable condition, while the condition of the third was not immediately known.
The chief said later that night, a second shooting was reported and police responded to the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues, where two more people were shot.
Those two victims are now listed in stable condition. The chief said multiple guns were recovered from the scene, but officials were not sure whether they were the weapons used in the shooting.
Brown said “several individuals were taken into custody” in connection with the violence.
Police have not said whether the shootings are connected. It is unclear whether any of the victims are MSU students.
A spokesperson for MSU said the Department of Police and Public Safety did assist ELPD in response to shootings, but “the criminal activity did not involve a threat to campus and did not take place on MSU’s campus.”
Brown said the East Lansing Fire Department also responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour span, including 75 incidents into Halloween night.
