HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - With Halloween right around the corner, the Harrisonburg Police Department wants to remind families of some basic Halloween safety tips to help protect kids as they go house to house throughout the night.

Juliana McGrath-Myers, outreach and communication specialist with the Harrisonburg Police Department, said making sure costumes are visible can help drivers better spot pedestrians.

“So if you’re going to be out past sunset, make sure if you are dressed in something that’s very dark or all black that you have something that makes you kind of stand out a little bit to a vehicle or other people passing by, whether it be something reflective, a flashlight, a glow stick, and then just make sure that you’re able to walk and move around comfortably in your costume, so you’re not tripping over everything,” she said.

She said it’s important for families and drivers to make sure they’re obeying traffic laws at all times.

“And use the sidewalks if they are available. Not everywhere has sidewalks, but it’s important to utilize those paths that are made for pedestrians when you’re out trick or treating, and drivers who may still be out commuting on Halloween night. Just be more aware, be mindful of your speed, slow down, look for people walking in the streets, and please limit any and all distractions so you’re completely focused on the road,” she said.

Myers said HPD will be out on Halloween night patrolling the area in vehicles and on foot, making sure everyone is having fun and staying safe.
