UVA volunteers tackle projects during 34th annual United Way Day of Caring
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - More than 2,300 volunteers from different teams spent Wednesday, tackling more than 130 projects at more than 100 Charlottesville area organizations, ranging from nonprofits to schools to early learning centers.
Among the teams volunteering were 1,400 employees from the University of Virginia and UVA Health.
“I believe in just being a good neighbor... I love doing things in teams. I’m a big team person. So being able to not only do this volunteer work, but also do it as a part of the folks who we work with every day... I think that’s meaningful,” said Devon Wade, a UVA Health volunteer.
“This is just one small, tangible way that as a university, we can be giving back in the place where our university is situated,” Wade said.
At the Center at Belvedere, volunteers spent the morning on landscaping, paint touch-ups and organizing storage spaces.
Wednesday also marked the launch of UVA’s new “Give Where You Live” campaign, a partnership with United Way that lets employees donate directly to local charities.
“We’re really thrilled to be partnering with United Way of Greater Charlottesville this year on our fall giving campaign. So this year, from now until December 18th, UVA employees and UVA Health employees will be able to donate to charities of their choice,” said Bethany Glover, UVA spokesperson.
