INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. (WILX/Gray News) - Two Michigan transportation workers were killed after an SUV struck them on a highway Tuesday.

According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on U.S. 127 near Holt Road just after 1:15 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said a 24-year-old man lost control of the SUV before slamming into the workers, who were later identified as Bruce Wagner, 51, and Steve Spenle, 49. They were performing roadwork.

The SUV driver, who was not immediately identified, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Michigan State Employees Association, a third worker was injured but did not suffer serious injuries.

“We are grieving with the family, friends, and coworkers of the MDOT workers who lost their lives while serving the people of Michigan. We are holding every person impacted by this tragedy close in our hearts,” MSEA President Jacob VanSickle said.

The sheriff’s office said an investigation is underway into the collision. Preliminary information suggests speed was a factor.

“Safety cannot be treated as a talking point after tragedy strikes. It must be built into every work zone, every assignment, and every decision before workers are put in harm’s way,” VanSickle said.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the townships’ fire and police departments.

Ingham County authorities are urging anyone with further information on the crash to contact Deputy Martin at 517-676-8444.
