VDOT honors workers killed in work zone crashes and urges driver safety
AFTON MOUNTAIN, Va. (WVIR) - The Virginia Department of Transportation honored construction workers who lost their lives because of work zone crashes Wednesday. April 22.
VDOT urged people to remember construction zones aren’t just traffic sites, they’re where people go to work each day.
They added that their main priority is making sure workers and drivers are as safe as possible, part of that is teaching drivers about the impacts of distracted driving.
“The main point of this vigil meeting, in addition to honoring those individuals, is making sure that everyone else understands the impacts of their decisions and their behavior in our work zones has here,” said Nick Donohue, Virginia Secretary of Transportation. “So we really are hoping that folks will take what we say today to heart and will really slow down and put down their phones as they go through our work zones here.”
VDOT says at the end of the day, the goal is to make sure that every worker and driver can safely return home to their family each day.
