Trial date set for Charlottesville activist who created makeshift crosswalk
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Charlottesville man facing jail time for creating his own makeshift crosswalk made his first court appearance Tuesday, May 27.
Kevin Cox was arrested last week for using what he alleges was chalk to make a crosswalk at the intersection of Elliot Avenue and Second Street Southeast.
“This is a common cause for many people in the city, people who may not like City Council, people who may love the City Council. But it’s all about our day-to-day quality of life on the streets and the sidewalks and everyone is affected by that,” Cox said.
Cox is facing misdemeanor charges for the intentional destruction of property with a value of less than $1,000. That means up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
In court Tuesday, Cox’s trial date was set for July 14th at 9 am.
He is being represented by Charlottesville-based lawyer Peter Frazier.
