CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Health is introducing a groundbreaking, non-invasive treatment for liver cancer, becoming the first in Virginia to offer histotripsy.

The procedure uses ultrasound technology to break down tumors without the need for surgery.

This new alternative at UVA will offer patients a less invasive treatment option with potentially faster recovery times.

“There’s no needles through the skin, there’s no incisions to be healed and so it’s quite advantageous especially for patients who’ve been fighting cancer for a number of years even,” UVA Health Interventional Radiologist Dr. Daniel Sheeran said.

Experts say this new approach could be a game changer for liver cancer treatment, giving new hope for patients who may not be candidates for traditional surgery.
