One dead after small plane crash in Albemarle

A plane coming from Rockingham, N.C., crashed in a wooded area off of East Monacan Drive.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - One person died in a small plane crash in Albemarle County on Saturday, January 25.

According to a Virginia State Police news release, a plane coming from Rockingham, N.C., crashed in a wooded area off of East Monacan Drive at around 12:50 p.m., just a few miles south of the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport.

State police are in the process of notifying the victim’s family, according to the news release.

Nearby residents said they heard a loud thump at the time and then silence. Some said they could see the wreckage, which landed on private property.

Charlottesville Airport Public Safety, Albemarle County Fire Rescue and Albemarle County Police responded on scene.
