Charlottesville residents sign petition to create additional downtown crosswalk
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A Charlottesville woman is leading a petition to convince city council to create a crosswalk at the intersection of Elliott Avenue and 2nd Street.
The intersection is where many people go to access Ix Art Park.
The speed limit at the intersection is 35 miles per hour, however, many people ignore that which causes pedestrian involved accidents.
Renee Byrd, the petition organizer, says she has reached out to the Charlottesville’s traffic engineer with no luck.
“We just want a painted crosswalk so that cars know and can see that people are crossing here because this becomes dangerous,” Byrd said. “The city said that we should just go up to 1st Street or go up to 6th Street and then loop around to get to this. A lot of problems with that, not only that, [but] it’s very inconvenient, and people don’t take inconvenient routes when they’re walking.”
Byrd says she will take this petition before city council on November 4, and others are welcome to join.
