CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA experts are testing different methods in a program to help those with type 2 diabetes.

They are trying to find approaches that do not necessitate weight loss or medication.

One expert says the first thing they teach diabetic patients is how to keep their blood sugar down through movement.

“We could all bring our blood glucose down with the contraction of skeletal muscles, basically movement,” UVA Professor of Psychiatry Doctor Daniel Cox said. “The more we move, the more the muscles take in the glucose, irrespective of insulin.”

It is a six-week program and patients will be given a Fitbit.
