CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A UVA doctor has been nationally recognized for her work with Charlottesville’s refugee community.

Dr. Fern Hauck, Professor of Family Medicine at UVA, is the recipient of the 2024 American Academy of Family Physicians Public Health Award.

This is the most recent in a long line of accolades that recognizes her work with refugee families through UVA’s International Family Medicine Clinic.

Dr. Hauck says she is thrilled to see the progress they have made in serving the population here.

“I was so happy and excited to see that, because it does really mean a lot to me,” Dr. Hauck said. “While we don’t work for awards and rewards, because what we work for is the care of our patients and families...it doesn’t hurt to get recognized once in a while.”

Dr. Hauck will also be speaking at the Virginia Academy of Family Physician’s winter conference about refugee healthcare.
