UPDATE: Victims identified, three dead, one injured in fatal train crash in Augusta County
STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (WVIR) - UPDATE: Three people were ejected from the van and died at the scene. They have been identified as Abner Comete, 48, of Boynton Beach, FL, Jacner Comete, 44, of Lauderhill, FL, and Wilda Comete, 38, of Lithia Springs, GA. Abner Comete is believed to be the driver of the passenger van.
A fourth passenger, Ronide P. Louis, 28, of Lithia Springs, GA, who was in the front seat and wearing a seatbelt, survived.
A crash involving a train and passenger van in Stuarts Draft killed three people, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred in Stuarts Draft on the 100 block of Wayne Avenue. VSP reported that the initial call came in at 8:08 p.m. on Monday, August 12.
According to VSP Sergeant C.J. Aiken, a 15-passenger white Ford Transit van with four passengers was struck on the driver’s side by a Norfolk Southern Train traveling toward Waynesboro.
Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
One female passenger was taken to Augusta Health with injuries.
“Witnesses they just heard the train toot their horn,” said Sergeant Aiken. “They looked up they just saw the impact.”
Virginia State Police continue to investigate.
