CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Marfan Foundation recently added University of Virginia Health to the National Clinic Directory.

UVA Health is the first clinic in Virginia on the foundation’s site.

Marfan syndrome is a vascular condition, which if undiagnosed, doctors say can be particularly dangerous for athletes. Experts say the syndrome can lead to increased risk of heart problems, lung issues, and musculoskeletal problems and potentially develop aneurysms

“This is because the connective tissue of the arteries is weaker and not able to handle stress as well. This leads to the arteries developing abnormal enlargements and can put those with Marfan syndrome at risk for tears or ruptures in the aorta and other arteries,” University of Virginia’s, Doctor Randy Ramcharitar said.

Doctors say if Marfan Syndrome isn’t diagnosed, a person could experience silent, life-threatening complications.
