CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A UVA scientist is helping lead the effort to develop guidelines for “precision medicine,” an individualized approach to treating patients.

Stephen S. Rich, a professor of Public Health Services at UVA, was one of 23 experts across the globe who collaborated to publish a guide for medical officials addressing precision healthcare. The consortium of experts, called BePRECISE, published their guidelines in the leading clinical medicine journal, Nature Medicine.

“Precision medicine really is about, again, tailoring the appropriate target of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis to the individual,” Rich said.

The new guidelines are critical for healthcare systems around the world, Rich says. He hopes that his research will help improve the experience for both the provider and the patient.
