UVA Health opens outpatient laser eye surgery clinic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - UVA Health LASIK Northridge held its grand opening on Friday, June 14.
The lasers use advanced technology that helps doctors learn more about patients’ eye health. This is UVA’s first LASIK outpatient surgery office.
It took seven years and a lot of people with a shared vision to make it happen.
“We can correct a lot of the problems by simply polishing the surface,” Ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Odrich said. “They’re very gentle and predictable lasers and help us not just for laser vision correction, but for what we call corneal scars and dystrophies.”
Dr. Odrich is one of the doctors at the new center in Northridge, leaning hard into new technologies.
“You get put on a machine that looks at the shape of that area that I’m operating on, which is called the cornea, and make sure the shape is going to be a shape that is compatible with the laser,” Dr. Odrich said. “The laser has a picture of your eye, it knows and matches it. it’s all information from you, the patient, guided directly into the laser.”
The clinic manager is Stephanie Dixon.
“Staffing is good. we are fully staffed at this point. Everything changes but at this point, we are seeking Lasik patients as well as comprehensive glaucoma, plastics, and anything that involves the eye,” Dixon said.
