CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A new discovery at UVA Health could make life easier for people with Type 1 diabetes.

In a recent study, researchers used an artificial pancreas that incorporated an AI algorithm to monitor and regulate blood sugar levels in patients.

Researchers found the AI-supported artificial pancreas kept participants’ blood sugar in the target range for an almost identical amount of time as an artificial pancreas without AI.

The algorithm essentially thinks for you.

”Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a very powerful tool for health care in different areas. Drug discovery, imaging recognition, early detection of disease,” director of UVA Center for Diabetes Technology Boris Kovatchev said.

Researchers are now trying to figure out how to implement this system in devices with low computational power, like an insulin pump.
