CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Friday, March 15, was a big day for students with the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Today was Match Day. That’s when students at UVA and schools all across the country find out where they’ll be doing their residency.

Hundreds of families and friends gathered on UVA Grounds to celebrate the soon-to-be-doctors as they found out where they will be spending the next several years.

“I’m really excited because I’m from Baltimore, actually. So I got to go back where I grew up and give back to that community,” Jocelyn Ray said.

After ripping open her white envelope, the letter inside revealed Ray was going to Johns Hopkins University.

“I hope it’s my number one, and I hope it’s in Boston,” Aaliyah Meade said. “I wanted to use my career to affect positive change from a social standpoint, and particularly in OBGYN. Black women are dying in exceedingly high rates, specifically from childbirth. So, hopefully I can be a force of change in the field.”

Meade got her wish: She is heading to Harvard.
