UVA Cancer Center awarding grants to help fight cancer disparities
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The University of Virginia Cancer Center is giving money to fight against cancer disparities through Comprehensive Cancer Center Community Grants.
This is the second year UVA is sponsoring five community projects. Hitting Cancer Below the Belt, Vance Street Missionary Baptist Church, Primary Care Partnership, Hopecam, and the Yellow Door Foundation each received $10,000.
“We really see the value of doing these community-based projects, and letting the community organizations take the lead and setting the direction on what we should be doing around cancer, especially around early detection and prevention,” Lindsay Hauser said.
Hauser says sponsoring the projects gives a stronger push to help fight common disparities like prostate cancer in Black men and colorectal cancer.
“So we are really making sure our committee members are aware of what screening options are out there, making sure they have access to those screenings to help them get to those screenings, and making sure that they complete those screenings,” Hauser said.
