CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The University of Virginia School of Medicine earned a major increase in federal research funding.

“The reason why it’s important is the larger our research portfolio, greater likelihood that we’re going to have a chance to develop even more cures to help,” UVA School of Medicine Deam Melina Kibbe said.

UVA School of Medicine is among the top 20 institutions for National Institutes of Health funding.

The funding increased by $19.1 million.

“This is a direct result of some of our strategic efforts to really grow the research dollars that are coming to the school of medicine to support our research,” Kibbe said.

Kibbee says part of its future goals is the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology will add to the growth of its research.

“It spans everything from small molecule to nano therapeutics to cell-based therapeutics, to gene therapies, vaccine development, it’s the whole spectrum of developing therapies for patients,” Kibbe said.

The 350,000 sqft. institutes will be located at Fontaine Research Park.
